Museums/Historical Attractions

South Florida Museum is the largest natural and cultural history museum on Florida’s Gulf Coast. The museum interprets the region from the Pleistocene to the present. Highlights include fossil evidence of Florida’s earliest mammals and marine species and the Montague Tallant collection of prehistoric and early post-contact archeological artifacts. Recently opened is the Environmental Wing focusing on Florida’s ecology and bio-diversity in the Pine Uplands and Riverine Galleries.

Other exhibits cover local maritime traditions, early 20th-century medical practices and Spanish exploration in the New World. Spanish Plaza has full-scale replicas of a 16th-century manor house, chapel and conquistador Hernando DeSoto’s birthplace.

The South Florida Museum is the home of Snooty, the oldest living manatee in captivity.  Snooty is more than 60 years old!!

The Museum is open every Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM, year-round, in Parrish, FL. Hour and a half excursions on historic rail equipment depart from the Parrish Train Station at 11 AM and 2 PM. Special events are scheduled throughout the year featuring themed train rides. The pride of the Austrian Empire’s Spanish Riding School, these rare horses perform their classical equestrian moves every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Winter training sessions for these horses are open to the public the last weekend of December through the last weekend of April. Donations are accepted for the care of the animals.

The 18-hole "Manatee County" course at the Manatee County Golf Course facility in Bradenton, Florida features 6,747 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72 . The course rating is 71.6 and it has a slope rating of 122 on Bermuda grass.  Designed by Lane Marshall, ASGCA, the Manatee County golf course opened in 1977. Gary MacDougall manages the course as the Director Golf Division.

McKechnie Field is the spring training home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. And up until 2010 that was the only professional ball that was played here. It underwent major renovations in 1993. The seating is split into three distinct sections - one behind home plate, and one along each baseline. Approximately 1/3 of the seats are covered. Lights were added before the 2008 season, so now night games can be played here. This was the last spring training venue to install lights. The concourse area is located behind the home plate and first base grandstands. It features plenty of concession stands with high quality ballpark fare - the best of which are the foot long hot dogs. Because of its location on a busy road, parking is quite limited and only available in private lots (most charging $5). The atmosphere here is one of the most laid back you'll find in Florida, probably because Pirates fans tend to be less than rabid. Just a nice, comfortable park to take in a Grapefruit League game. Starting in 2010, it will also be home to a Florida State League team, as the Pirates bought the Sarasota Reds and moved them here.

Tropicana Field is a Domed Stadium in St. Petersburg, FL, which has been the home of Major League Baseball's Tampa Bay Rays since the team's inaugural season in 1998, when they were the Devil Rays. It has also served as the host stadium for the Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl, an NCAA sanctioned College Football Bowl Game since December 2008. It is the only stadium in history to host full seasons of professional baseball, football, hockey and arena football, as well as college basketball and college football contests.
