If you haven’t visited, Texas Hill Country is the area between Austin and San Antonio. It’s known for rolling hills, rustic rivers, and rocky canyons and caverns. For both road and trail cyclists, it’s a great place to get out and ride. Try one of the following trails during your next trip!
5 Texas Hill Country Bike Rides
1. McKinney Falls State Park
Situated in South Austin, McKinney Falls State Park spans 726 acres. For easy biking, check out the park’s 3.5 miles of paved trails. If you’re up for rougher terrain, the park also has six miles of shared trails for mountain biking. The paved and off-road trails connect so you can go on a long ride.
2. Lyndon B. Johnson State Park & Historic Site
About 60 miles west of Austin is Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site. Here, you’ll find 2.5 miles of multi-use nature trails for hiking and biking. These are easy trails without steep climbs.
For road cyclists, the park features a 9-mile paved loop with very low traffic. This begins and ends at the visitor center and takes you through the park’s varied natural areas. While here, check out the ranch and boyhood home of LBJ.
3. Pedernales Falls State Park
Some of the best bike paths in Hill Country can be found along the Pedernales River. 5,200 acres of outdoors space exists at Pedernales Falls State Park in Johnson City. The mountain bike trail is about 20 miles and is mostly accessible to beginners. A few areas may be intermediate though, as they have steeper grades.
4. Guadalupe River State Park
If you drive 36 miles north of San Antonio, you’ll arrive at Guadalupe River State Park. The park features 10 miles of shared loop trails for mountain biking. The trails have incredibly scenic views but are difficult. The rides are at least intermediate level, with some advanced mountain bike trails.
5. Longhorn Caverns State Park Trail
This is a bike path in Hill Country that’s perfect for road cyclists. That’s because it follows Park Road 4 West. The length depends on how far you want to go, but you can make it stretch up to 40 miles. You can also choose to stick just to the hills or to go past the water of Inks Lake State Park. In any case, make sure you stop at gorgeous Longhorn Caverns.
