Help and Healing Through Sports and Art
For years now, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has been promoting wellness opportunities for our veteran’s through their Office of National Veterans Sports Programs and Special Events. Overall, the goals are to optimize independence, community engagement, well-being, and quality of life through adaptive sports and therapeutic events.
During the International Year of Disabled Persons In 1981, two initiatives began, which included both the first National Veterans Wheelchair Games and National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. Since then, this initiative has continued to grow, adding even more annual sports programs and special events:
- Golden Age Games
- TEE Tournament
- Summer Sports Clinic
- Creative Arts Competition & Festival
- Wheelchair Games
- Winter Sports Clinic
Not only are these programs are built on clinical expertise within the VA, but also with additional support from veteran service organizations, corporate sponsors, individual donors and community partners.
